FS Education Dept taken aback by appointment of teacher found guilty of racism | News Article

Bloemfontein - The Free State Department of Education has responded with shock after a former Wilgehof teacher was appointment at Dr CF Visser Primary School, despite being found guilty of racism two years ago.

Spokesperson Howard Ndaba says the department will contact the school to discover the reasons behind the appointment of Leonard MacKay at the school.

The South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) also expressed concern at MacKay’s appointment and questioned whether he had been properly rehabilitated before taking up his new post.

Meanwhile reports that MacKay has resigned from the new post have not been confirmed by Dr CF Visser Primary School.

In 2013 MacKay was found guilty of racism and hate speech after complaints that he called his students monkeys and the k-word.
