Free State settles fewest land claims | News Article

Bloemfontein - The Free State settled only one land claim in the previous financial year.

This is according to Chief Land Claims Commissioner Nomfundo Gobodo. Speaking during a meeting with Parliament’s Portfolio Committee on Rural Development and Land Reform, Gobodo said a total of 428 claims were settled nationally between April 2014 and March 2015. This number exceeded the Commission on Restitution of Land Rights' targets for the settling and approving of land claims.

The most claims – 195 - were settled in the Western Cape while the Free State had the least, with only one claim settled.
The total financial value of all claims approved was more than R2.7 billion.

More than 8 000 cases had been pending since 1999 and according to the commission are at various stages of completion.
