Bloemfontein - Soldiers of the South African National Defence Force are thankful for efforts like that of the Mangaung Metro, which bestowed the freedom of the city of Bloemfontein to 1 SA infantry Battalion, yesterday.

Commander of the South African Army Infantry Formation, Major General Lindile Yam, says the battalion is a fighting battalion, who are entrusted by South Africa to stabilise the African battle space in an effort to secure trade routes for South Africa and the continent. He says soldiers seek acknowledgement for their sacrifice, “It is reassuring for soldiers to know their dedication, facing bullets are acknowledged by a smiling nation”.

Acting Executive Mayor Nthabiseng Mokotjo, who granted the freedom of entry to the battalion during the parade at the Town Hall, said South Africa is fortunate in that it is among the freer nation-states on the continent.

According to her, the event is a celebration for the increasing support that people receive from the National Defence Force and with the right to freedom of the city they can exercise their right accordingly.

“In some parts of the world ordinary civilians continue to suffer the worst atrocities committed by militias and the national defence forces at worst. Ours is a legitimate freedom and democracy born out of a negotiated settlement.”

She added that South Africa is content with its choice of recognising unity in diversity and the country proudly witnesses the SANDF in defence of the constitution.

More than twenty armed vehicles also formed part of the parade through the streets of Bloemfontein yesterday.
