Calls for answers on Thuthukile's promotion | News Article
Johannesburg - Political pressure is mounting on the African National Congress (ANC) to explain to Parliament the controversial promotion of President Jacob Zuma’s daughter to a senior position in government.

Thuthukile Zuma was within two months promoted from the role of public liaison officer at the Department of Telecommunications and Postal Services to chief of staff despite her lack of experience.

Accoridng to EWN questions have been asked about Thuthukile’s lack of experience and skills for the senior position but the department has defended the appointment, saying she is qualified and denying she received preferential treatment.

The chief of staff is responsible for all employees in the department and must also look at the minister's budget.Suggestions are that one needs at least five to 10 years of experience for the role.

The 25-year-old holds an honours degree and has worked with Minister Siyabonga Cwele before.

Democratic Alliance (DA) spokesperson Marius Redelinghuys says the party is concerned and wants clarity.

“The DA will also pursue the matter through Parliament and ask questions around the appointment process, her qualifications and the total package offered.”

Although the post which Thuthukile now holds was never advertised, ministers reportedly have the discretion to appoint someone without opening it to the public.

The presidency hasn’t commented on the appointment.
