DA opposes adding Mao Tse Tung to Tshwane name database | News Article

Pretoria - The City of Tshwane has been strongly criticised by opposition party, the Democratic Alliance, over a decision to nominate the name of a Chinese revolutionary to its name database.

According to reports a decision was taken at a monthly council meeting to add Mao Tse Tung to the list as he meets relevant criteria by having been a revolutionary in his own right.
The names bank is used to name streets and buildings within the municipal area.

However, DA councillor Elmarie Linde says the Chinese dictator was a “mass murderer, a womaniser, liar and drug baron”. She says by adding Mao Tse Tung to the name bank, the ANC is celebrating the death of nearly 70 million people.

The city defended their decision by saying they kept Andries Pretorius and Paul Kruger's names in the databank as well.
