Suspended Hawks head cleared of charges | News Article

Durban - Internal disciplinary charges against suspended Hawks head Major-General Johan Booysen were withdrawn on Thursday, the SABC reported.

Booysen was charged in August 2012 with managing and participating in an enterprise through a pattern of racketeering activity which involved receiving payment to carry out hits in the KwaZulu-Natal minibus taxi wars.

Earlier this year, all criminal charges against him were withdrawn but the police pursued disciplinary charges against him which were linked to his alleged failure to take action against members of the Cato Manor serious and violent crimes unit for their alleged use of excessive force.

The SABC reported that the SA Police Service was not clear on when Booysen could report for duty following the charges against him being withdrawn.

On Wednesday, the Democratic Alliance called for him to be immediately reinstated.

DA MP Kohler Barnard accused national police commissioner Riah Phiyega of stalling with the issuing the paperwork which would result in Booysen returning to work.
