Nearly 2 000 violent protests in past year | News Article

Pretoria - South Africa experienced nearly 2000 violent protests in 2013/14. This was revealed during the release of the annual crime statistics in Pretoria this morning.

National Police Commissioner Riah Phiyega said there were more than 11 500 peaceful protests, as well as 1907 that were “not peaceful”.

Phiyega also revealed there has been an overall national decrease of 0,4% in the seventeen serious crimes monitored by police. Of these, however, murder increased by five percent, which Phiyega says is cause for concern.

She says there was also significant increase in robbery with aggravating circumstances, which rose nationally to 12.7%.

Other trends include increases in bank robberies, which went up by 200 percent, while drug-related crimes increased by 26.1 percent.

There was some good news in that rape showed a 6.3 percent decrease and sexual assault went down by 4.9 percent.

Common assault decreased by 3.3 percent.

Stay tuned to OFM News later today for comprehensive analysis of the 2013/14 SAPS crime statistics.
