Find students accused of alleged racist assault: ANC | News Article

Cape Town - Authorities must make haste in finding the university students who allegedly assaulted a 52-year-old woman in Cape Town, the ANC in the Western Cape said on Tuesday.

"These kinds of old apartheid style racial abuse is festering and grows in the Western Cape," said the province's ANC leader Marius Fransman in a statement.

On Monday, The Star reported that five students reportedly from the University of Cape Town assaulted Delia Adonis at a parking lot at Stadium on Main in Claremont last month where she worked as a cleaner.

Adonis had called for help when she saw the men leave a night-club and assault a man who had came out after them. She later went outside the mall to smoke where she found the students waiting for her.

Her son, who was working part-time as a cleaner at the same mall, came to get keys from her and saw the students encircling her and swearing at her.

He tried to intervene and they started swearing at him too.

One of the men kicked his mother and she fell over. Once on the ground, they all kicked her all over her body.

Police spokesman Frederick van Wyk said an assault case was being investigated.

The report said a policeman was also facing charges of defeating the ends of justice and bribery for allegedly trying to quash the case.

Fransman called on the night-club to hand over closed-circuit television footage to the police.

It also wanted the university to take action against the students.

"The ANC will keep an eye on the developments of this case and take action when needed," said Fransman.
