Pretoria - South African embassy officials in Ireland are investigating the deaths of an expat couple there, the international affairs department said on Friday.

"We have sent officials from our embassy to where the incident took place," said departmental spokesman Nelson Kgwete.

"We are still awaiting a report from... Dublin on what they have established."

The Irish Times reported that the married couple from South Africa, were found wounded and bleeding by firefighters attending to a separate incident in a village in County Clare on Wednesday night.

The wife, 27, apparently ran out of their house into the street with her older daughter before collapsing and dying from stab wounds.

Her 44-year-old husband was found at the stairs of their home with a neck wound, holding a knife before he too collapsed and died.

According to various media reports the couple were due in court this week over custody issues, as Angelique allegedly wanted to return to South Africa with their daughters, aged two and four.

The Irish Times reported the couple's wounds appear to have been inflicted with the same kitchen knife.

Local police have apparently ruled out the involvement of anyone else in the deaths.

Kgwete said embassy officials were driving to the village on Friday to verify the citizenship status of the couple and establish what could be done to help the children.
