Cop linked to Krejcir cases withheld evidence for cash | News Article

Johannesburg - A police crime expert who has handled several high profile cases is to be tried after he allegedly withheld evidence and reports in return for cash, police said on Saturday.

Constable Thabiso Kubyane's trial will be held in the Alexandra Magistrate's Court from the 2 to 4 March, said national police spokesperson Lieutenant General Solomon Makgale.

"[He is] out on bail of R10 000."

According to the Saturday Star, Kubyane has been linked to cases involving Czech fugitive Radovan Krejcir and murdered Rwandan Colonel Patrick Karegeya, amongst others.

The paper reported Kubyane had been assigned to collect evidence after three people, alleged to have been trying to kill Colonel Nkosana "Killer" Ximba and forensic investigator, Paul O'Sullivan, were arrested.

The trio was believed to have been hired by Krejcir.

The investigating team waited a long time to receive Kubyane's report.

Allegations later surfaced that Kubyane had been calling family members of the suspects, offering to assist them to make the case go away.

Money was paid to him via Shoprite or Spar, the paper reported.

After suspicions were raised, the investigating team went to Kubyane's office, searched it and found two reports.

One stated fingerprints were found on the scene while another claimed there were none.

Kubyane was believed to have also withheld evidence collected from the Michelangelo Hotel in Sandton where Rwandan Colonel Patrick Karegeya was killed.

Currently, he faced only a single charge of murder as police had decided to only charge him for the Krejcir case.
