Human trafficking on the rise─── 09:26 Sun, 29 Mar 2015
Durban - Anti-human trafficking activists say a multi-disciplinary approach is needed if the growing number of human trafficking incidents in the country are to be reduced and the crime eventually eradicated.
At seminar on human trafficking at the University of KwaZulu-Natal this week it emerged that a total of 550 cases were reported between 2011 and 2013, while this year, there are 19 known incidents so far.
Open Door Crisis Care Centre believes the figure is most likely not reflective of the number of people - especially children - being trafficked every year in the country.
Human Rights activist Professor Susan Kreston says it's for this reason that a task team has been set up, comprising the National Prosecuting Authority, South African Police Service, social workers and doctors, to deal with human trafficking.
