ISIS teen: State Security urges South Africans to be vigilant | News Article

Johannesburg - The State Security Agency (SSA) has given the assurance that there are no terrorists in the country but says South Africans should nonetheless be vigilant at all times.

This comes after a 15-year-old girl from Cape Town was taken off a British Airways flight in Cape Town after a failed attempt to join ISIS.

Officials suspected that she was going to board an international flight to join the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS). It is understood that evidence found in the girl's bedroom suggests that she had been in contact with ISIS recruiters.

SSA spokesperson Brian Dube says the issue of recruitment and terrorism are a global concern.

Dube says terrorism is a worldwide problem, but security officials in the country are working tirelessly to ensure the safety of South Africans.

He added that this doesn’t mean there are terrorists in South Africa, but the use of social networks and technology is a challenge as terrorists are using technology to attract children.

"But we know our security cluster officials in this country are working tirelessly to ensure our people are safe. People must calm down. There are no terrorists in the country."
