Johannesburg - A murder-accused police detective who has been on the run since the bodies of three suspects were found in a field in Carletonville was nabbed in Witbank on Thursday, Gauteng police said.

He was arrested alongside an informer, said Brigadier Mashadi Selepe.

The pair had been on the run since the police announced earlier this week they had arrested another detective and two informers after the bodies of the three suspects were found.

"Police have made a breakthrough... in arresting a police officer and an informer who have been on the run who were being sought for murder and attempted murder charges laid against them," said Selepe.

"They were arrested in Witbank by the Gauteng Provincial Tracking Team led by Major General Vincent Leshabane [on Thursday] late afternoon."

They will be handed to the Independent Police Investigative Directorate for further investigation, he added.

Gauteng safety MEC Sizakele Nkosi-Malobane welcomed the arrests, which happened within 48 hours.

"This clearly demonstrates the zeal to find closure in the case and I hope that the criminal justice system will act decisively in sending a stern message that no one is above the law."

Gauteng police announced on Monday that a detective and two informers were arrested for allegedly killing three murder suspects and shooting and injuring a fourth suspect in Carletonville.
