Port Elizabeth - Three people were badly injured on Thursday in what is believed to be the latest gang-related shooting in the northern areas - this time right outside the Gelvandale Magistrate's Court.

Port Elizabeth Police spokesperson Captain Sandra Janse van Rensburg said two men, aged 30 and 32, and a woman, 22, were shot at around 10:25 on Thursday morning in Reginald Street.

"One man was hit in the neck, the other in the neck, back and arm, while the woman was also hit in the neck," she said.

Janse van Rensburg said the Bethelsdorp woman appeared to have been hit by a stray bullet.

Sources described how pandemonium broke out at the court when a man approached the two men, took out a gun and opened fire on them in what was believed to be a gang hit.

One of the men who had been shot, ran into the court house to seek shelter, making his way into one of the court rooms before being carried to a holding cell by court orderlies.

The second man fled down the street away from the court building in an attempt to get away from his attacker. He was found by police who responded to the shooting and taken back to the court building.

Both men and the woman received treatment at the court before being transported to Livingstone Hospital to receive treatment.

Janse van Rensburg confirmed the two men had been at the court to appear in a case relating to a motor vehicle theft.
She said the police suspected the shooting was gang related and had opened three cases of attempted murder. No arrests had been made.
