Johannesburg - Late former president Nelson Mandela’s grandson Ndaba Mandela walked into the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court on Friday morning, to attend a case against a family member accused of rape.

Ndaba Mandela, dressed in a suit and flanked by other Mandela family members, walked into the courtroom filled with journalists after 9am.

One of Mandela’s other grandsons was expected to appear in court for allegedly raping a 15-year-old girl. The man could not be named until he pleaded.

On Friday morning, Gauteng police confirmed a man would apply for bail after he was accused of rape.

“We do have a case where a girl was raped in court today, but details will be released in court,” spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Lungelo Dlamini said.

The man made his first court appearance on Monday. He was arrested last Friday and held at Parkview police station.

The alleged rape reportedly took place on August 7, in a bathroom of a restaurant in Greenside, north of Johannesburg. The alleged rape reportedly took place when the victim went to toilet and was followed by the accused.

The man was expected to plead on the charge and apply for bail on Friday.
