Cape Town - Income from internet services rose by 8.6% between 2010 and 2013, with data bringing in the most money, Statistics SA said on Monday.

Of the R35.1bn which was raked in for internet services in 2013, the last year surveyed by Statistics SA, wireless data revenue came to R19.7bn and fixed data R11bn.

Wireless data recorded the highest increase of 14.2% per annum compared with 2010, Statistician General, Pali Lehohla, said in a presentation on Transport, Storage and Communications on Monday.

Of the overall 2013 income of R224bn in telecommunications services, 69% of it was from fixed lines and mobile phones - 27% from airtime, 19% from connections, 18% from subscriptions, 5% from fixed line calls and 0.4% from public phones.

Snail mail and associated courier activities brought in R14.2bn or 5% of the total income of R276.3bn for the post and telecommunications industry.

Comparing the Transport and Storage industry between 2010 and 2013, Statistics SA found the total income was R401,9bn in 2013, compared with R296bn in 2010.
