Proteas ready for Australia | News Article

The Proteas netball team will face the world number ones and defending champions, Australia this afternoon in the second match for World Cup qualification round in Sydney.

The Proteas won their first match for the tournaments’ second round yesterday when they beat the 8th ranked Wales 68-40 in by far their more clinical performance at the tournament to date.

Since losing to 58-51 to Malawi in their opening match of the tournament, the girls have regrouped and have been impressing by beating Singapore and Sri Lanka was well.

South African goalkeeper, Adele Niemand of the Free State says tomorrow’s match will be their toughest of the tournament thus far, but they won’t be backing down for anybody.

"To give them a good contest will be the first thing.

"We need to show the world that the Proteas can actually compete with the best and I think that's the most important.

Coach Norma Plummer, who led the Australians to the 2011 World Cup title in Singapore says she welcomes the match against her native Australia as its valuable experience for her side.

"It's about them learning against the quality and that's the quality they don't get day-in, day-out.

"It's a big difference and it definitely tunes a player and sets them up for quality netball.

This afternoon's match in Sydney starts at 12:20.
