The National Union of Mineworkers’ (NUM) leader, Cyril Ramaphosa, was awarded with the Olof Palme prize for great “courage and wisdom in the struggle for human rights and dignity” on 24 October 1987.

Ramaphosa was its first recipient after it was established in February 1987.

It is an annual award for an outstanding achievement in the spirit of Olof Palme and in honour of former Swedish Prime Minister, Olof Palme, who was assassinated in 1986.
