Bloemfontein - Western Province has all their senior and junior teams in the finals of the 2014 National Juniors and Seniors Table Tennis Championship presently taking place in Bloemfontein at Tempe.

The Western Province dominated all categories and will have all eight of their teams playing in the finals which will be played this afternoon at 17:00.

This  championship is hosted Free State Table Tennis Federation (FSTTF) in conjunction with the Department of Sport, Art, Culture and Recreation, Mangaung Metro Municipality and the Free State Sport Confederation.

The inter-regional part of the championship which has four categories, the under 12/14/17 as well as the seniors for both men’s and women’s, will be completed today.

The Open Championship has started with the knockout rounds and will continue until Saturday.

Uthukela (KZN) and Western Province (u12), Eastern Cape and Western Province (u/14) and Eastern Cape and Western Province (u/17) will lock horns in the junior boys’ finals.

Western Province and Free State (u/12), Western Province and uMgungundlovu (KZN) (u/14) and again the Western Province and uMgungundlovu (u/17) will lock horns in the junior girls’ finals.

In the Senior final, Western Province and Gauteng North compete for the Men’s title while Western Province Women will entertain Eastern Cape in the other final.

The event organiser and deputy president of the FSTTF, Kagisho Lekhela, says despite Free State having only one team in the finals, the province had an outstanding event.

“The performance of the Free State teams has drastically improved compared to last year,” Lekhela tells OFM Sport.

“We had almost 15 teams across different age categories and ten of them qualified for the quarterfinals and out of that ten, six made the semi-finals. So we are happy with the team’s performances.”

“So, besides our u/12 girls team that will lock horns with Western Province team in the finals, we have about two teams that will be fighting for the third spot,” Lekhela adds.

“I want to congratulate the team and its management on behalf of the FSTTF, for the improved performance. The team camped before coming to this tournament and their efforts really paid off” Lekhela said.
