No world champs for Phelps | News Article

Eighteen-time Olympic gold medallist, Michael Phelps of the USA will not be competing in the 2015 FINA World Championships in Kazan, Russia in August.

Neither will be taking part in the Pan-American Championships in Toronto, Canada.

US Swimming confirmed that the swimming legend withdrew from the team in October last year, however said that they had left the door open Phelps to change his mind, albeit that the process would be complicated.

Phelps retired from swimming after the 2012 London Olympics after famously losing the 200m butterfly finals to South Africa’s Chad le Clos.

Le Clos won the gold in a time of 1 minute 52. 9 seconds to edge the 2004 and 2008 Olympic winner and world record holder in the event by 0.05 seconds.

Phelps was suspended by US swimming for six months after being arrested driving under the influence of alcohol and speeding in September last year.
