Kovsies secure home final in Varsity Hockey─── 08:44 Tue, 12 May 2015
The 2015 Varsity Hockey series final will be hosted in Bloemfontein next week after the University of the Free State Kovsies and University of Johannesburg advanced to the championship match.
In the first semi-final played in Johannesburg last night, hosts UJ beat the 2nd placed and much more fancied University of Pretoria Tuks thanks to goals by captain Kaila Flemming and Proteas striker Lilian du Plessis.
In the second semi-final, Kovsies knocked out the defending champions, the University of Stellenbosch Maties with a hard fought 3-1 win.
Ayanda Gans, captain Line Malan and Nicole Walraven all hit the backboard for Kovsies, while Proteas midfielder, Quinita Bobbs scored Maties solitary goal.
The side from the Free State get to host the final by virtue of topping the standings after the round round stages winning seven out of seven.
Furthermore the team scored 31 goals in the round robins and 34 in total including the semi-final and have just conceded five.
Malan currently leads the standings as the top goal scorer with seven of her attempts hitting the mark.
In the previous match between the two sides, Kovsies trashed the girls from Johannesburg 5-1.
Next week’s final will be played on Monday evening at 18:45 at the University Astro’s.
