South Africa ready for GB in Valencia | News Article

The South African women’s hockey team come up against Great Britain this afternoon in their quarter-finals match of the FIH World League semi-finals tournament being played in Valencia, Spain.

On Tuesday the girls in green and gold got a massive confidence booster when they played to a goalless draw against one of the traditional powerhouses of world hockey, Germany.

The draw was enough to earn the Proteas in a spot in the last eight of the tournament after a 4-1 shock loss to Ireland, a disappointing 4-1 loss to the fifth ranked USA, and a one-all draw against Uruguay.

After their draw against the 2004 Olympic and two-time World Champions, skipper Nicolene Terblance said their big match is today.

National coach, Sheldon Roston feels his side has taken a lot of confidence out the draw.

"We have been playing in our shells.  We have a great structure and system that allows the players freedom to express their ability.

"Against Germany was the first time the players fully appreciated the benefits which that freedom brings.

South Africa’s match is at 16:30 this afternoon, at 11:30 Ireland come up against China, 14:00 sees Argentina taking on the USA in what is sure to be a cracker and at 19:00 Germany lock-horns with the hosts Spain.
