Sasolburg - One-hundred-and-forty Metsimaholo Municipality employees in Sasolburg have been dismissed. Municipal spokesperson Gino Alberts confirmed the dismissal today following the illegal strike of the South African Municipal Workers Union.
Samwu members claim the municipality failed to heed their complaints relating to the filling of vacant posts. They say temporary employees are not given first preference.
Alberts says they issued dismissal letters earlier this month and gave Samwu members an opportunity to make presentations on reasons why they shouldn’t be dismissed.
The municipality gave the striking members of the South African Municipal Workers Union an ultimatum earlier this month that unless they returned to work, they would face strict disciplinary action.
