• 1863: Susanna Catharina Smit, wife of Erasmus Smit and Gerrit Maritz's sister, who rendered valuable service in teaching the children of the Voortrekkers on the trek to read and write, dies in Pietermaritzburg.
• 1904: The South African Agricultural Union (SAAU) comes into being in Pretoria. It was first called the Intercolonial Agricultural Union of South Africa.
• 1971: SA Prime Minister completes a tour of homelands in the Northern Transvaal.
• 1962: Martin Luther King Jr. jailed in Albany Georgia.

Arts, Music, TV:

• 1925: Kippie Moeketsi, SA jazz player, is born. He died in 1983.
• 1977: John Lennon is granted a green card for permanent residence in US.
• 1991: TV Guide publishes its 2000th edition.
• 1998: Binnie Barnes, British actress (b. 1903) dies.

Sports:

• 1870: Jim McKendrick, SA rugby Springbok, is born in Stellenbosch.
• 1969: Jonathan Neil (Jonty) Rhodes, SA cricket player, is born in Pietermaritzburg.
• 1998: The SA cricket team loses the fourth test against England on Trent Bridge with 8 wickets. One test remains to be played and both countries have won one test each.
• 1992: Sadovyi swim world record 4x200m freestyle (7:11.95)
