• 1976: Emil Solomon (Solly) Sachs, socialist and SA trade union leader, dies in London.
• 1988: Maryanne Serrano (21) is killed in a bomb explosion in the Wimpy Bar at the Benoni Plaza, Benoni. Fifty-six people are injured, of whom nine seriously.
• 1968: Wash Senator Ron Hansen makes 1st unassisted triple-play in 41 years.
• 1971: US Apollo 15 (Scott & Irwin) lands on Mare Imbrium on the Moon

Arts, Music, TV:

• 1930: First broadcast of "Death Valley Days" on NBC-radio.
• 1935: First Penguin book is published, starting the paperback revolution.
• 1966: Beatles' "Yesterday... & Today" album goes #1 & stays #1 for 5 weeks.
• 1947: Arnold Schwarzenegger, Austria, body builder/actor/politician (Terminator, 38th Governor of California)

Sports:

• 1891: The SA rugby team plays for the first time against a team of the British Isles, and lose 0-4 in Port Elizabeth.
• 1959: Petra Felke, German DR, javelin thrower (world record 1988)
• 1997: Peter Malinga, SA welterweight, wins the World Boxing Union (WBU) world champion title.
• 2005: The SA Springbok rugby team beats the Australian Wallabies 22-16 at Loftus in Pretoria, in the opening match of the Tri-nations championship.
