• 1900: The mayor of Cape Town, Thomas Ball, lays the corner stone of the Cape Town city hall, designed by architects Reid and Green from Johannesburg.
• 1902: More than 9 000 Egyptians die of cholera.
• 1966: Dutch Internal minister Smallenbroek resigns after driving drunk.

• 1964: "Funny Thing Happened" closes at Alvin Theater NYC after 965 perfs.
• 1966: Beatles last public concert (Candlestick Park, SF).
• 1982: Steve Miller's "Abracadabra" hits #1.
• 2010: 62nd Emmy Awards: Mad Men, Modern Family, Bryan Cranston & Kyra Sedgwick win.
Sports:
• 1909: World's 1st air race held in Rheims France. Glenn Curtiss (USA) wins.
• 1950: International Olympic Committee votes to admit West Germany & Japan in 1952.
• 1891: The SA rugby team plays the second test ever against the British Isles and loses 0-3 in Kimberley.
• 2004: The Olympic Games end in Athens with a spectacular fireworks display and SA 40th on the list of medal winners, after Hestrie Cloete and Mbulaeni Mulaudzi both won a silver medal on the 28th. SA won six medals in all, including one gold.
