• 1956: IBM introduces the first computer disk storage unit, the RAMAC 305.
• 1985: The World Health Organisation (WHO) declares Aids a worldwide epidemic.
• 1997: Mother Teresa, Nobel laureate known world wide for her charity work, receives the first state funeral accorded a private citizen of India since the death of Mohandas K. Gandhi in 1948. Following the public funeral in Calcutta, India, Mother Teresa's body was finally buried in a private ceremony at Mother House, the headquarters of her charity. She visited SA in 1988.
• 1998: A German photographer, Christian Hohmann (36), dies in a KwaZulu nature reserve when an elephant cow gores him.
• 1979: The SA government grants 'Independent' status to Venda.

• 1998: 50th Emmy Awards: The Practice, Frasier, Andre Braugher & Christine Lahti win.
• 2009: 26th MTV Awards: Beyoncé, Taylor Swift & T.I. f/ Rihanna wins.

• 1998: Gary Bernard, photographer of The Star, commits suicide in Johannesburg.

• 1983: US mint strikes 1st gold coin in 50 years (Olympic Eagle)
