• 1917: Oliver Reginald Tambo, president of South Africa's African National Congress, is born in a rural Mbizana, in eastern Mpondoland. He died in 1993.
• 1926: The late Emily Hobhouse is honoured in Bloemfontein during a memorial service and her ashes, received from London, are placed at the foot of the Vrouemonument (Women's Memorial).
• 1997: US releases a redesigned $50 bill.
• 1992: Great Britain issues postage stamp on 100th anniversary of Tolkien.
• 2005: At least twenty people are injured in a collision between the Blue Train and the Trans Karoo at Deelfontein, near De Aar.

• 1915: Hermien Dommisse, SA actress, is born.
• 1937: The Afrikaans service of the SAUK (SABC) radio station is instituted.
• 1965: The Prime Minister, Dr H.F. Verwoerd, opens a new international radio service, 'The Voice of South Africa', intended to counter the hostile propaganda beamed to the Republic from foreign sources.
• 1975: Covers of both Time & Newsweek picture rock singer Bruce Springsteen.
• 1988: "ET" released to home video (14 million presold).

• 1968: Kathy Whitworth wins LPGA River Plantation Golf Invitational.
• 1973: 1st time Islanders beat Rangers-3-2.
• 1992: Don Baylor appointed 1st manager of Colorado Rockies.
• 1996: US beats Japan, 21½-14½, at Nichirei International Golf Tournament.
• 1995: Meyrick Pringle takes cricket hat-trick in England tour game at Soweto.
