Dozens arrested for Woolworths protest─── 07:48 Sun, 26 Oct 2014
Johannesburg - Nearly 60 people, who yesterday protested in a Woolworths store in Killarney Mall, Johannesburg, have been arrested.
Police spokesperson Thabo Malatji says the group of 57 was charged with public disturbance.
The protests are linked to continued calls to boycott Woolworths as it continued to trade with Israel following the deadly war in Gaza.
According to Tasneem Essop from the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions campaign, the protest was completely peaceful and demonstrators had simply walked into the shop and lay on the ground with their placards.
Woolworths said in a statement, the safety of its customers and employees was its "highest priority" and that they had "no choice but to contact the local authorities".
