• 1953: Dr Albert Schweitzer & Gen George Marshall win Nobel Peace Prize.
• 1960: Michael Woodruff performs the first successful kidney.
• 1968: Nobel prize for chemistry awarded to Lars Onsager (thermodynamics).
• 1998: In response to a call by President Nelson Mandela, representatives of government, business, labour and other community and development organisations meet at the Presidential Job Summit to discuss ways to create jobs.

• 1906: Archibald Campbell Mzoliza Jordan, Xhosa writer and linguist and the first African to be appointed as lecturer in the School of African Studies at the University of Cape Town and to receive a Ph.D. at that university, is born at Mbokothwana Mission, Tsolo district, Transkei.
