• 1901: Emily Hobhouse reports on her findings regarding concentration camps during the Second Anglo Boer War.
• 1908: The first Boy Scout troop is organised in England by Robert Baden-Powell. The Boy Scouts are active world wide, also in SA.
• 1935: 1st canned beer, "Kruger Cream Ale," is sold by American company Kruger Brewing Co.
• 1943: Hitler orders German troops at Stalingrad to fight to the death.
• 1988: Prof. Chris Barnard (65), South African heart specialist, marries his third wife, Karin Setzkorn (24).
• 1993: Turkish journalist and writer Ugur Mumcu is assassinated by a car bomb in Ankara.
• 2011: World TB Day, instituted to build public awareness that tuberculosis today remains an epidemic in much of the world.

• 1961: Elsa, the lioness made famous by Joy Adamson's book Born Free, dies in Kenya.
• 1986: 43th Golden Globes: Whoopi Goldberg, Color Purple win.
• 1972: WRIP (now WDSI) TV channel 61 in Chattanooga, TN (IND) 1st broadcast.
• 1975: "Hot l Baltimore" situation comedy premieres on ABC TV.
• 1979: Tatyana M Ali, actress (Sesame St, Fresh Prince of Bel Air), born in NYC, New York
• 2011: Bernd Eichinger, German film producer and director (b. 1949) dies.
 
Sports:
 
• 1930: J E Mills scores 117 on Test Cricket debut, NZ v England, Wellington.
• 1989: The International Cricket Conference (ICC), after meeting in London on 23 and 24 January, decided to suspend as from 1 April all players who have links with South Africa.
• 1996: The Bafana Bafana, SA soccer team, loses the Africa Cup of Nations Group A game versus Egypt 0-1at the FNB Stadium, Johannesburg.
• 1962: Jackie Robinson is 1st Black elected to Baseball Hall of Fame.
• 1963 : Buddy Rogers & Lou Thesz wrestle in Toronto, Rogers becomes WWF wrestling champ & Thesz becomes NWA champ.
• 1970: Valeri Muratov skates world record 500m (38.99 sec).
