• 1862: Edenburg is established in the Orange Free State as a church village. The Volksraad granted application for recognition as a town on 4 March 1863.
• 1966: Military Coup in Ghana.
• 1887: The Diggers News appears in Johannesburg.
• 1968: The Rand Afrikaans University opens in Johannesburg with Dr. Nic Diederichs as first chancellor.
• 1924: Mahatma Gandhi released from jail.
• 1989: 150-million-year-old fossil egg (oldest dinosaur embryo) found.
• 1988: Seventeen anti-apartheid organisations are restricted in terms of section 6 of the Public Safety Act, amongst them the Azanian People's Organisation and COSATU.
