“The stark realities of hunger, insecurity, and unemployment that continue to affect communities across South Africa are casting a shadow over the ideals of freedom and democracy.”

The national leader of Rise Mzansi has announced that his party will not be celebrating Freedom Day this year.

Songezo Zibi said the decision stemmed from a fundamental belief that true freedom cannot be realised when basic human needs, such as food, safety, and employment, are not met.

Zibi's declaration came during his second visit to the Free State, on Thursday (25/4) as part of the party's campaign trail, when he reiterated the party's commitment to addressing the pressing issues facing the province and the nation at large.

He highlighted the stark realities of hunger, insecurity, and unemployment that continue to afflict communities across South Africa, casting a shadow over the ideals of freedom and democracy.

“In a normal society, these meetings will take place on a Saturday or at night – after work – with streets safe enough for people to return home after the meeting. This is [one of the] reasons we will continue to fight – it should not be necessary to meet during the day on a weekday, because most people should be at work or gone for skills training,” Zibi emphasised.

He further slammed corrupt Home Affairs officials for illegal immigrants and pointed out the importance of also fixing border security.

Meanwhile, the DA leader was also in the Free State this past week as part of the party’s nationwide Rescue South Africa Tour. While addressing supporters in Bloemfontein City Hall, John Steenhuisen spoke of how people in the Free State have suffered due to corrupt officials mismanaging funds.
