“Hopefully the hoodoo is a bit broken now and we can win them on a more regular basis.”

The Proteas Women created history on Sunday by becoming the first women’s team from South Africa to beat Australia in any format of the game.

South Africa beat Australia by six-wickets in the second T20 International in Canberra to level the series.

The world champions, Australia, scored 142/6 in their innings.

Grace Harris top-scored for the hosts with 31 not out, while the captain and wicketkeeper, Alyssa Healy, scored 29 and Tahlia McGrath in turn contributed with 23.

Masabata Klaas was the pick of the South African bowlers with an outstanding 2/16 in three overs.

The captain Laura Wolvaardt scored 58-runs and Tazmin Brits scored 41 as South African chased down the target in 19 overs. Britz was striking at a rate of 146.42 as she needed 28-balls for her knock. The allrounder, Marizanne Kapp, also played her part with 20p-runs.

Wolvaardt said the win will go down as a special one.

“It's very special, obviously having never beaten them before in any format or game is something we were looking to change and to do it in their own backyard is incredibly special,” said the influential skipper.

“Especially just with a lot of senior players retiring in the past few years to have this new dynamic young team just obviously beating the World Champions is something very special and something that hopefully can change our mindset.

“Hopefully the hoodoo is a bit broken now and we can win them on a more regular basis.”

The third and final T20 International will be played on Tuesday in Hobart.
