Durban – President Jacob Zuma expressed his “heartfelt condolences” to the families of seven children and an adult killed in a fire at a place of safety on Thursday morning.

"We are very saddened by this tragic and painful loss of life and the serious injuries to other children. We convey our heartfelt condolences to all the families who are going through a most difficult period,” Zuma said in a statement.

Eight people, seven of them children, were killed at the Lakehaven Child and Youth Care Centre in Sea Cow Lake, near Durban. They were aged between seven and 19.

Zuma wished the injured a speedy recovery and said the provincial government was helping the affected families.

Eighteen people, including two child minders, were asleep inside a cottage when it caught fire, KwaZulu-Natal department of social development spokesperson Ncumisa Ndelu said.

The centre caters for abused, neglected, and abandoned children.
