Robbers use wheelchair as ploy to rob store in Bethlehem─── 16:50 Mon, 04 Jul 2016
Bethlehem - Three men overpowered a cash-in-transit security guard inside a store in Bethlehem on Monday morning and made off with an undisclosed amount of cash after using a wheelchair as a ploy, Free State police said.
One of the suspects rolled one of his accomplices into the store in a wheelchair, said police spokesperson, Thabo Litabe.
"It is alleged that as the cash-in-transit security guard emerged from the cash office inside the store the two pounced on him whilst he was on his way to the vehicle. They instructed him to drop the cash on the floor and when he refused, a scuffle ensued between the two which led to two shots being fired to the roof, then the third suspect joined in the struggle and managed to grab the firearm, belonging to the security guard, from his holster," said Litabe.
"The suspect that was alleged to be wheelchair-bound suddenly stood up and grabbed the cash box from the security guard before they all fled the scene."
Another shot was fired into the roof before the three fled in a get-away vehicle waiting for them outside the store.
"None of the suspects were identified and they all drove away in a white sedan without registration plates."
