Bloemfontein - Intelligence driven operations by the Navilsig police have led to the arrest of an alleged former Lesotho Defence Force (LDF) member and his girlfriend and the confiscation of mandrax tablets worth almost half a million.

Police spokesperson, Chaka Marope, says Navilsig police were conducting their routine stop and search on Wednesday when they stopped a white BMW X3 with Gauteng registration number travelling on the N8 road from the Bloemfontein City Centre to Lesotho.

Upon searching the vehicle, the operating members discovered two plastic bags containing 4 500 mandrax tablets hidden underneath the passenger seat.

The drugs were confiscated and the street value estimated at R 450 000.

The confiscated drug merchandise was allegedly destined to Lesotho for a transaction deal.

The 43-year old man and his 36-year old girlfriend are expected to appear in the Bloemfontein Magistrates Court soon.
