Bloemfontein - A guard from a security company collecting and transporting cash, sustained four gunshot wounds in the hand during a cash-in-transit heist at a bank at Bloemfontein's Preller Square this afternoon.

Police spokesperson, Wendy Nkabi, says the injured guard was transported to Life Rosepark hospital. She says five suspects fled the scene in a dark blue bakkie after about R900 000 was taken. She says one security guard remained in the cash-in-transit van while two others went to collect money.

Two security guards went to the back to collect money. She says as the two guards exited their side entrance to the bank, five men approached them and demanded money. One of the robbers, armed with a 9mm firearm, shot one of the guards.

An eyewitness told OFM News that two of the robbers entered a shop near the scene. They wanted to buy a hat to prevent sunburn. One of the suspects had a firearm hidden in the back of his trousers. They did not buy the hat and left the shop. The eyewitness then heard two shots and screaming. One of the men who entered the shop earlier was among the robbers.
