Bloemfontein - According to the National Chairperson of the South African Local Government Association (Salga), Thabo Manyoni, all elected municipal councillors should be results-oriented.

Manyoni says councillors don’t have the leisure to debate about issues, however, they need to be pragmatic. He was speaking at a media briefing in Bloemfontein where Salga introduced the Councillor Induction Programme which all councillors have to attend this week. Manyoni explained that communities need results quickly and speedily.

"We don’t just want service delivery, we want quality service delivery. We don’t just want roads, we want roads that are usable and friendly. We also want roads without potholes. We also don’t just want water, we want water that is consumable, reliable and safe. In other words, if you are in this sphere of local government, you need to be mindful of all these factors. Councillors who will go through this programme will end up having NQF accredited certificates to a level of a diploma in local government and they can use it to study further, obtaining a higher education and accumulating a master's or honour's degree. It is Salga’s intention to professionalise the local government industry and make sure that we have people who understand this industry so that it can function very well.”

Salga has developed the programme in a manner which ensures that every municipal council member from various political parties will be empowered to speedily deal with matters that local government is faced with.

Manyoni highlighted that local government is also all about councillors dealing with consequences of their decisions.
