Sporadic bouts of violence at Mafikeng NWU persist | News Article

Mahikeng - Although the Mafikeng Campus of the North West University remained closed today, there were still minor sporadic bouts of violence by students protesting against the proposed fee increase for 2017.

This is according to NWU spokesperson Louis Jacobs. University management decided yesterday to close the campus for staff and students for the remainder of this and next week. The campus will in effect be closed until the end of the upcoming recess, meaning classes will only resume on October 9.

According to Jacobs no damage was incurred or injuries reported at the Mafikeng campus today. The situation is still being monitored. Meanwhile, he adds the Potchefstroom Campus remains open, while all academic activities at the Vaal Campus have also been suspended.

“The management of the Vaal Triangle Campus today obtained a court interdict, to be used should there be any further disruptive actions at the campus,” Jacobs added.
