Kimberley - All academic and administration services at the Sol Plaatje University (SPU) in Kimberley have been suspended for the day.

This following a student protest which forms part of the #FeesMustFall campaign outside the campus this morning. Vice-Chancellor (VC) of the SPU, Yunus Ballim, says administration services are, however, expected to continue tomorrow as normal. According to him a final decision to resume with classes tomorrow and for the rest of the week will be made pending the outcome of discussions with students. He says a decision to resume with admin services tomorrow was made after a group of protestors, taken in for questioning by police this morning, committed themselves to refrain from disturbing campus activities if they are released.

Police spokesperson in the Northern Cape, Sergio Kock, says no arrests were made this morning and no cases of public violence were opened. Police only took a total of 24 students in for questioning after which the Provincial Police Commissioner, Peter Shivuri, allowed 15 men and nine women to go back to campus. This was on condition that they refrain from disrupting campus activities.

A group of protesters blocked an intersection at the SPU campus as well as other streets in the vicinity with rocks, garbage bags and burning tyres this morning at about 07:00 but all the blocked roads were re-opened. Management of the Sol Plaatje University and students are reportedly meeting this afternoon.

Kock says the police are monitoring the situation.
