Mixed reaction to proposed drinking age legislation─── MOEKETSI MOGOTSI 08:08 Sun, 09 Oct 2016

Bloemfontein - There are mixed feelings about new drinking age legislation for the country.
This after the Department of Trade and Industry released a draft Liquor Amendment Bill, containing the means of delaying the introduction of alcohol to the youth, for public comment. It has proposed increasing the minimum legal age for purchasing and drinking alcohol, from 18 to 21 years old.
A manager of a prominent Bloemfontein pub, who wished to remain anonymous, says she thinks it’s a good dicision to extend the drinking age limit because 18 to 21 year olds are not that responsible.
However, if the law comes into effect it might affect business negatively as the bulk of their customers fall in this age group. Other proposals include trading and advertising restrictions, among others.
