Welkom - The smooth running of the matric exams in the Free State could be in jeopardy as the Matjhabeng Municipality, which includes Welkom, is taking a hard stance on debtors.

Executive Mayor, Nkosinjani Speelman, said he is going to cut off services to schools, government departments and residents who owe the municipality for services delivered.

The outstanding debt for schools in the area amounts to R12 million. Municipal spokesperson, Kgojane Matutle, says it is all systems go for ‘Operation Patala,” starting today. On its list is a secondary school in Welkom.

“We will be starting with schools. One of the schools would be Unitas Secondary School here in Welkom. The other one would be Home Affairs offices. We are cutting off everybody, because notices have been issued to all defaulters and this is our last resort - to cut off,” Matutle said.
