Bloemfontein - The Free State Health department is still not clear after being under administration for more than a year.
Finance MEC Elzabe Rockman says although the provincial government initially thought that the department’s financial health would be in a stable condition by now, they had to extend the administration period. The department together with the provincial Education Department were put under administration in the last financial year. Its financial woes and administration troubles lead to an exodus of medical personnel, a shortage of medication and aserious backlog in the maintenance of medical equipment.
Rockman says the situation will be assessed again next year.
"Health is much better. They are making progress, it is much more stable. The internal audit unit is much better because the internal control unit is much better. But Health is huge. We wanted to get out at the end of September/October, but they said they are not ready."
