Bloemfontein - South Africa’s first Health Ombudsman, Malegapuru Makgoba, is set to release his first report next week, following an investigation.

Makgoba was appointed in May last year by Health Minister Aaron Motsoaledi and was tasked with establishing the country’s first health ombudsman office. He told OFM News at the time of his appointment that one of the first investigations to be tackled by his office was the death of five babies at the Bongani Hospital in Welkom in the Free State.

Motsoaledi, however, requested Makgoba in September to urgently investigate the death of 36 patients in mental healthcare facilities in Gauteng. The investigation focused on quality management and care of the patients based on clinical records and any other information relevant to the matter which will assist the investigation and fact finding.

At the time Makgoba said the Bongani Hospital investigation was in its final stage. His office has now set a date for the release of the report – next week Wednesday - into the circumstances surrounding the death of the mental health patients.
