Premier Sylvia Lucas will deliver her State of the Province Address during the red carpet event – one of the biggest on the legislature’s annual calendar. 

A festive mood is welcoming the approximately 1 000 invited guests, filling up the Mittah Seperepere Convention Centre. 

Carmen Gopane, from the Provincial Legislature, says the address is going to set out government’s key policy objectives and deliverables for the year ahead. The premier is also expected to highlight some of the achievements, challenges and plans to address them.

Opposition parties in the Northern Cape say they hope that Lucas will announce plans to address unemployment in the province. Top of their wishlist is also a call for the premier to “come clean” about the Kimberley Mental Hospital. The multi-million rand project has been dragging on for years – way past its construction deadline - and the original budget of the project has ballooned over the years. 

National Treasury investigated the project and a report was handed over to the provincial government, but it has not been made public yet.
