Tonie Rossouw, a forecaster at the Bloemfontein office of the South African Weather Service, says the central parts of the country will receive rain on a daily basis for the rest of the week.

Rossouw says the abnormal amounts of rain seen over the past two weeks and the rainfall seen over the summer has brought some drought relief. “For me at this stage, I will say that the drought is broken. 

There are still drought conditions in the western parts of the Northern Cape and the Western Cape but we must understand that they are winter rainfall areas. I think in the eastern parts of Namaqualand they can still receive some rain from the summer system. Also in the Eastern Cape, that’s also part of the winter rainfall area,” he says.

The Vaal, Grootdraai and Spitskop Dams are already overflowing at 103.5%, 102.8% and 126.19% respectively. The Bloemhof Dam is at 95.25%.

The Gariep Dam is also among those expected to be full at the weekend, currently standing at 96.41%. Saulspoort and Sterkfontein Dam levels are at 98.04% and 88.77% respectively.

There are, however, dams that haven‘t received much rain. Tierpoort, Kalkfontein and Groothoek Dams are sitting at 4.01%, 12.61% and 15.51%.
