Warrenton - Authorities have seized expired food worth nearly R3 million from three areas in the Northern Cape.
Hawks spokesperson, Philani Nkwalase, says the Hawks’ Commercial Crime unit in conjunction with police, Environmental Health Services and immigration officers from the Department of Home Affairs conducted a disruptive operation in Pampierstad, Hartswater and Warrenton.
He says officials conducted raids at nine shops in Pampierstad and expired goods to the value of over R1.2 million were confiscated and handed over to the Health Inspector for disposal. In Hartswater expired goods to the value of R1.2 million were confiscated, while in Warrenton goods worth R500 000 were seized from four shops.
Nkwalase said no charges were laid against the shop owners pending a report from Environmental Health Service inspectors. He pleaded with the public to exercise vigilance when buying groceries, particularly for infants.
