Bloemfontein - The Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) will host its main May Day rally in Bloemfontein on 1 May (Worker’s Day) this year.

The union made an announcement after its week-long Central Executive Committee meeting concluded on Thursday last week.

Cosatu spokesperson, Sizwe Pamla, says it was decided at the meeting that this year’s celebrations need to be taken to places where workers reside instead of simply hosting the main rally in Gauteng.

He says this decision is in line with the union’s resolution to go back to basics and close the social distance in society. “We are clear that going forward, it is going to be crucial for May Day to be used as a mobilisation platform for workers to actually engage, discuss, and also reflect on the challenges that they’re facing in the workplace."

“We will be having a march in the Free State and then it will culminate into a rally where we will bring all of the national office bearers of the national alliance partners from the SACP, the ANC and Cosatu, where they will be delivering messages.”

"The celebrations will be held under the theme: 'Build Cosatu engines for People’s Power' on the ground through struggle for ownership and control of the economy.”
