Man nabbed in R12 million drug bust at OR Tambo | News Article

Johannesburg - The South African Revenue Service (Sars) on Monday said Customs officers at OR Tambo International Airport intercepted a male traveller from Tanzania, who was carrying narcotics in two suitcases worth over R12 million.

The bust took place on Sunday. The 36-year-old man, who was carrying two large suitcases, was asked to put his luggage through the Customs scanner.

“The scanner image revealed ten clear plastic bags that contained a white crystal substance,” said Sars spokesperson, Sandile Memela.

“Upon investigation, this turned out to be ten bags of Ephedrine. The total weight of the consignment was 40.20 kg with an estimated street value of R12 060 000.”

Memela said the suspect was handed over to the South African Police Service and he was expected to appear in court soon.
